Kenya Project

Drawing on our experiences in Myanmar we have launched a new partnership with the Ngoswami school in Kenya. This is a community school established by the local residents in a rural district of the Masai Mara national park.

We have tailored our unique approach to meet the demands of this learning environment splitting sessions between early years learners who have little to no English language skills and learners with a higher level of literacy. Using our partnership with Wimbledon High School we have targeted early years learners with regular EAL entry level training during the UK school term. This has been led by the faculty of Wimbledon High and delivers on our model of student led classes to early learners in our target schools. Lessons have been taught for over a year by Wimbledon High School students resulting in crucial language skills interventions for over 100 students.
Alongside this term-time work, we have also run a holiday programme for students in Ngoswami to ensure teaching can take place outside of the term in the UK. This has involved two parallel programmes of learning. Early years EAL continuing to build on our term time work for the younger students and a specific booster programme for those with higher levels of literacy. The booster programme has aimed at providing crucial additional support for students who are looking to transition towards internationally recognised qualifications.
In order to facilitate the programme at Ngoswami we have sought to improve the connectivity and infrastructure of the school.
As a result of the programme they have, for the first time, permanent access to the web and we have also helped to expand by furnishing and building a new classroom.
To date over 200 students in Ngoswami have gained access to the holiday programme.
